Eat plant-based whole foods

An annual beer festival? Sign me up!

Would you like your sweet tooth tickled? Let’s take a cooking class!

Wine tasting? Want to meet Fabio? Who’s up for a healthy eating challenge?

Where on earth can you find all of these events? I know, I thought of Disneyland at first too, but their churros don’t count as a ‘healthy dessert.’ The correct answer, my food loving friends, is Whole Foods Market!

myHealthyOC.com is always looking for new LOCAL, HEALTHY, FUN spots in Orange County and we love a good visit to our local Whole Foods Market to pick up a few favorite products, a lunchtime swoop on the fresh deli area or as a regular stop on our shopping schedule. Low and behold, I recently received an anonymous tip about a miraculous store calendar where you could find some seriously fascinating events going on. Most of these are complimentary and if there is a charge, it’s ridiculously reasonable.

Let’s get a taste of what Whole Foods Market has to offer, shall we?

Healthy eating challenge
This week I attended the first of a complimentary four-part series on “28 Days of Healthy Eating.” The program, based on Health Starts Here, focuses on healthy eating through the lens of buying plant-based, low-fat, nutrient-dense whole foods (not the store, silly). The great thing about this is that you can join in on any of these days so you can start your healthy eating challenge anytime! They will have a health packet for you stuffed with tasty recipes, food journal info and guidance for your nutrition intake.

When can you go next? Wednesday, Feb. 29 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Whole Foods Laguna Beach.

Not able to make it Wednesday nights? Healthy eating specialist Gerrie Adams will be leading healthy cooking classes Thursday evenings at the Tustin store from 6 to 7 p.m.

Extra perk: Events like these make for a fun evening out. I learned all about the Health Starts Here program from Gerrie Adams while we were in this cool California bistro, Nirvana Grille, which was ALL about healthy, locally grown and organic foods. Nirvana Grille (a 30-second stroll from Whole Foods) will be hosting the healthy eating challenge each week.

Tickle your sweet tooth with these healthy desserts
A few weeks ago I went to the Whole Foods Huntington Beach location for a complimentary class on “True Cleansing: How to Detox Your Body without Starving.” Like Gerrie with the healthy eating challenge, I was fascinated by Katherine Nilbrink’s vast knowledge of healthy eating methods and habits. Katherine will be making another appearance in Huntington Beach for a healthy desserts class, one you won’t want to miss! Chocolate cake but with no refined oils or sugars? Sounds amazing!

When: Monday, March 12 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Please check Whole Foods Huntington Beach website for more details.
